Running Further

This saturday was my first 8km run. It did contain a bit of walking (300m) up one of the nastier hills on the course, but in general was not too bad. It took 50:16 to complete the jog, but I know I was traveling fairly slowly towards the end, so plenty of room to improve, and get it down closer to 40min over time. The run itself seemed fairly easy when compared to my 6km run although I am not...

Look ma, no splints.

It has been a unusual yet good week for running so far. 13km completed of my 20km goal and my legs are holding up. Unusual because last week the shin splints were back and I had only run 13km total over a longer period of time.As an update my current plan has me running 5 days a week (Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, & Thursday) although currently not at very long distances.Saturday 3km RouteSunday 6km RouteMonday 4km RouteWednesday 4km RouteThursday 3km RouteStill...

Return of the Splints

The splints were back with a vengance after my run last night. Having completed a 4km circuit on Saturday, Monday, and Thursday it was very annoying. I iced my shins after the run as reccomended on some website that I had read and this helped reduce the pain quite nicely. I believe the splints came about due to being somewhat tired (11:30pm sleep on wednesday) and not consiously attemting to minimise my inner foot impact.I have found  through experimentation that...

Last night sonia and I went out for dinner and a film to take advantage of the cheap tuesday night films. We headed off to the Hoyts complex in Sylvia Park (in my opinion the best cinema complex in Auckland currently) after work to start our evening.

With the bulk of the shopping complex closing shortly after we arrived the foodcourt was not going to be an option, so we had a look at a few of the restaurants surrounding the cinema complex. We had a choice of Nando's, NMI(Japanese), Wagamama, a Cock'n'Bull type pub and Moroccan restaurant both of which the name eludes me.

Saturday morning marked a change in route for my run. I upgraded from my 3km route to a 6km circuit. Couldn't make it all the way non stop jogging, but I did complete the circuit walking when the elevation rose above flat. My legs held up ok, but were begining to get a bit sore from the 4km to 6km mark. Once again this was tendons & shins feeling sore rather than the mussells. Further effort will need to be put into strengthening my shin mussels to avoid injury.

Preliminary Shoe Results PDF Print E-mail

I gave my new running shoes their first test out last night, and they seem to have made quite the diference. After completing my run my legs were feeling fine with no pain in the shins. This is however coming off a 1 week break to get over the shin splints, so further running later this week will be the true test.

I have been planning out my current and future running routes using the GMap-Pedometer website which is a great site to let you know how far you have run without needing to buys a GPS watch or drive the route in your car.

My current route is only just over 3km long, and it is still the hills that are the killers (even though the total vertical delta may only be about 50m). This weekend I will extend up to 4km, and then hopefully 5km by the end of the following week.

Upgraded my combo over the weekend. A new Westinghouse stainless steel fridge for our kitchen due to our old fridge being reclaimed by its rightfull owner. Its nice to have a much bigger fridge though, going from 250L to 400L capacity makes all the diference.

In addition to the fridge I have also bought a pair of Mizuno Wave Aspire running shoes to hopefully help overcomming my shin splints. I bought the shoes from Athelete's Foot and got my feet measured and scanned so as to get the best shoes. While standing I have a normal weight distribution across my feet, but get slight "Over Pronation" when walking and jogging. For those who don't know what "Over Pronation" is, it is the flattening of the arch of the foot which leads to an incorrect distribution of weight and can lead to amongst other things shin splints. Hopefully all things going to plan these shoes will cure this problem. In addition to shin splints finding good running shoes is not that easy either as I have wide feet making a lot of brands not suitable for my width to length ratio.

Added a few new components to the website now too.

  • RSS feeds are now available.
  • Added the ability to add pages to Digg/Delicious/Facebook etc.
  • Started looking at a tag cloud component too.

This being the 2rd reserection of my site of my site, I hope this time to get it right. No longer will I have to battle with a horrid webhost provider which to tell the truth made it extreemly difficult to stay moviated to keep things working. Now that I have moved to dreamhost.com (thanks ebs for the tip) I finally have the control and service that I need to get somthing working.

Obviously what you see now is clearly in an incomplete state, I still have many things to do. Being busy with work, wedding, and wedding website design anything else will take a lower priority but I WILL get there.

Todo List: (In no apparent order.)

  1. Complete the website for my wedding. The wedding is still 6 months away, but I will need the site up to field RSVP's etc. So realistically I have another 2-3 months to get this finished. I am creating the site myself using a Silverlight/PHP/MySQL setup, but more on this in a future post.
  2. Create a template for this website. There is noway I am keeping the default Joomla template on here.
  3. Make this website a decent blog website. I have chosen to use Joomla over somthing like Wordpress because Joomla can do a whole lot more stuff. Obviously Joomla being a CMS rather than a blogging platform means that I will have to add in or create all the necessary plugins that I need to get this site working great. A bit more work than WordPress, but more potential, and I like to tinker.
  4. Loose weight for my wedding. My plan is to shed 10-15kg for my wedding to look at my best. Currently this involves regular jogging around the neighbourhood. No GPS hardware on me on free(work) time sitting in my office to get specs like the inspirational mr ebs, but updates will be kept. The first thing to determine here will be how to get over my case of Shin Splints that are currently hampering my jogging.
  5. Build a wind powered generator. 'Why?' you may ask, for no other reason than I think it will be fun. I am not talking about a huge propeller on a 10 meter poll, just simple a small device to generate a little electricity (hopefully anyway).
  6. Complete my research into the Vaughan's of New Zealand as decended from James Vaughan(1804). Since its coming up to 170 years Vaughan's in New Zealand it would be fun to find out how many of us there actually are now.
  7. Get Sonia to participate on this site.
